No. 25 W&J Extends Win Streak To Five With PAC Sweep
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College moved its winning streak to five games after sweeping Thiel in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Ross Memorial Park on Tuesday.
The Presidents (21-4, 12-2), ranked 25th by D3Baseball.com in the poll released earlier Tuesday, edged the Tomcats (12-18, 5-9) by a score if 3-2 in game one and coasted to a 13-4 victory during game two.
W&J received all the runs it would need in game one during the second inning. Sophomore third baseman Kyle McLain (East Amherst, N.Y./Canisius) singled to start the frame and came around to score two batters later when sophomore designated hitter Derek McIlvaine (Washington, Pa./Chariters-Houston) roped a base hit to left. After a walk to sophomore first baseman D.J. Michalski (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), junior second baseman Scott Liller (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) plated McIlvaine with an RBI single to left. Junior center fielder Scott Brady (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) added a sacrifice fly for the final run of the inning.
Senior right-hander Dave Trushel (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) surrendered single runs in the first and third innings, but the Tomcats could muster nothing more offensively, and Trushel picked up his team-leading seventh victory. He tossed his sixth complete game of the spring, tied for the 11th-highest mark in NCAA Division III and the second-most in W&J single-season history. Trushel allowed just two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out five.
Trushel’s counterpart on the mound, Nick Rossmiller, saw his record drop to 5-2 after surrendering three earned runs on five hits. Rossmiller fanned two in six innings of work.
The Presidents jumped on Thiel early in game two, scoring nine runs during the first three innings, and cruised to a nine-run victory.
McLain was 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI and scored with run, while Brady contributed two hits, a pair of runs and one RBI.
Senior shortstop Aaron Klinec (North Olmsted, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and sophomore right fielder Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) both scored three runs and added one hit, while senior left fielder Brian Szabo (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) added a pair of hits and two runs batted in.
Sophomore right-hander Brian O’Neill (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) earned his fourth victory of the season on the mound. O’Neill struck out five in four scoreless innings, while allowing just one hit.
Brad Bates took the loss for the Tomcats as he gave up nine runs (four earned) on five hits in 2.1 innings. He walked one and hit four batters. In all, Thiel pitching hit nine batters during the second game.
PAC leading W&J opens a three-game set with second place Westminster with a road doubleheader on Saturday (1:00 pm) in New Wilmington.
