Notre Dame (Ohio) Rallies For 9-8 Win Over W&J Water Polo
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Notre Dame (Ohio) scored six of the match’s final seven goals to earn a 9-8 men’s water polo victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.
The Falcons (3-8) trailed 6-3 at halftime and the Presidents’ lead stretched to four 25 seconds into the third quarter when sophomore Mike Magdic (Franklin Park, Pa./North Allegheny) scored. However, Notre Dame closed the third quarter with four consecutive goals to tie the contest heading into the final eight minutes. W&J saw a number of its shots clang off the goal posts during the second half.
Senior Mike Johnson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) put W&J back in front by scoring with 3:30 left in regulation, but NDC once again had the answer on a Vanja Kopilas’ tally one minute later. Jonathan Cubilos, who had a team-high three goals, netted the eventual game winner with 1:37 left.
Magdic led the Presidents with four goals and three steals. Sophomore Carl Krause (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) added two goals and one assist, while Johnson and freshman Kevin Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) both provided one goal.
Junior Dan Francisco (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) and sophomore Chris DeNunzio (Greenwich, Conn./Canterbury) split time in the net and both grabbed nine saves.
W&J (2-4) looks to pick up its first home win of the season later this evening when battling Penn State-Behrend (8:00 pm).
