Offense Erupts As W&J Downs Grove City
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Presidents’ batters belted out 14 hits as the Washington & Jefferson College baseball team cruised to a 10-1 PAC victory over Grove City at Ross Memorial Park on Friday evening.
With the win, W&J set single-season school and conference records with its 17th league victory of the spring. The Presidents (26-5, 17-2) have won 10-straight PAC games, while the Wolverines (5-26, 3-16) have lost eight in a row.
W&J batted around during a five-run first inning, added a single run in the third and plated two more in the fourth for an 8-0 lead. Sophomore right fielder Josh Stanisica (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) capped the scoring with his third home run of the spring, a two-run shot to right field, in the sixth inning.
Eight different W&J batters recorded at least one hit led by sophomore designated hitter Tyler Schultz (Strongville, Ohio/Strongsville), who collected three singles. Schultz also knocked in one run.
Staniscia and sophomore first baseman D.J. Michalski (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) both produced two hits and scored three times. Senior left fielder Brian Szabo (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and junior second baseman Scott Liller (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) each added a pair of hits and one run batted in.
Sophomore right-hander Randy Risch (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) earned his third victory after striking out six in seven innings. Risch allowed just one earned run and scattered seven hits. Will Cheney was throttled for 10 runs (eight earned) on 14 hits in six innings, as he took the loss for Grove City.
The Presidents and Wolverines will complete their three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader at R. Jack Behringer Field in Grove City, Pa., beginning at 1:00 pm.
