Offense Leads W&J Past Oglethorpe 15-4
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team produced 15 runs on 13 hits and downed Oglethorpe (Ga.) 15-4 on Tuesday morning.
The Presidents (6-1) have now scored in double figures during their last three games and have scored at least seven runs in each of their six wins.
Oglethorpe (6-12) jumped out to a 2-0 lead during the top of the first inning. Cory Leff doubled to knock in Vernon Trice and then later scored on a Presidents’ error.
W&J quickly tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore third baseman Kyle McLain (East Amherst, N.Y./Canisius) laced a single to left field that scored senior shortstop Aaron Klinec (North Olmsted, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and sophomore right fielder Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional).
The score remained tied until the bottom of the third inning when McLain put W&J ahead by one run with an RBI groundout. Senior left fielder Brian Szabo (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) followed with a run-scoring single to left and two batters later sophomore designated hitter Tyler Schultz (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) shot a single through the left side that scored Szabo. Junior center fielder Scott Brady (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) drew a bases-loaded walk to knock in the fourth run of the frame, as the Presidents took a 6-2 advantage.
W&J loaded the bases again during the fourth inning on walks by Staniscia and sophomore first baseman D.J. Michalski (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and a single from McLain. Schultz came through with a two-out, two-RBI base hit, extending the W&J lead to 8-2.
The offense continued to pour it on the Stormy Petrels, as Staniscia plated a pair with a triple in the fifth and knocked in one more with a sixth-inning single. Szabo added another run with a sacrifice fly, while Klinec rapped an RBI double down the left field line, upping the score to 15-2.
Staniscia led W&J with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, along with three RBI and a trio of runs scored. Klinec added a pair of hits and four runs, while McLain and Schultz both produced two hits and two runs batted in.
Sophomore pitcher Brian O’Neill (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) earned the win after striking out three and allowing two runs (one earned) in five innings of work. A quartet of Presidents’ relievers held Oglethorpe scoreless during the final four frames.
John Gibbs took the loss for Oglethorpe after allowing two earned runs during the second inning. He left the game before retiring a batter. Jake Spear led the Stormy Petrels at the plate with two hits and one RBI.
W&J will have the day off tomorrow before continuing its Florida trip with a doubleheader against Trinity (Conn.) on Thursday beginning at 2:00 pm in Auburndale.
