Offense Shines in 4-0 Rout of Saint Vincent
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Stellar offensive play led the Washington & Jefferson women’s soccer team to its first Presidents’ Athletic Conference win of the season, a 4-0 triumph over Saint Vincent Tuesday night at Alexandre Stadium.
W&J (6-5, 1-1 PAC) hammered out 11 shots against the Bearcats (6-5, 1-1 PAC) in the first half, and turned three of those shots into goals. The Presidents struck first nearly 15 minutes in when senior Sarah Zeh (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) headed home her third goal of the fall off a pass from classmate Bianca Rajan (Haiku, Hawaii/King Kekaulike).
Nikki Hladik (Renfrew, Pa./Butler) tallied the second goal of the game six minutes later, bending in the first goal of her senior campaign. Hladik took advantage of more scoring opportunities in the 35th minute when she headed in a pass from the left from senior Dani Span (Baden, Pa./Quigley Catholic). The assist from Span marks her first collegiate point.
After taking a 3-0 lead and 11-5 shot advantage into halftime, the Presidents would net one more goal before regulation time expired. At 62:33, senior Holly Shipley (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) connected on her seventh goal of the year, giving W&J a four-goal margin. Katie Kelly (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), another member of the W&J senior class, assisted on the goal. Shipley’s goal brings her within two of notching 50 for her collegiate career.
Starting goalkeeper Morgan Kinyon (Stockton, Calif./Oakdale) made four saves in the contest to acquire her third shutout victory of the season. Each member of the senior class, with the exception of Ariel Shasko (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) who was unavailable for tonight's contest, contributed with a goal or an assist.
Washington & Jefferson takes on Geneva this Saturday (Oct. 12) on the road beginning at noon for another PAC matchup.
