OWU Cruises Past W&J Men’s Lax 21-4
DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan raced out to a 13-4 halftime lead and then scored all eight goals of the second half to earn a 21-4 men’s lacrosse victory over Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon.
The Battling Bishops (2-0) had nine different goal scorers led by Colin Short’s five-goal effort. Short also added one assist, while Tommy Minkler set up five OWU goals.
Ohio Wesleyan grabbed a 6-0 lead 9:30 into the first quarter. Drew Scharf scored the first two goals, while Minkler assisted on the final two during the early run.
Sophomore midfielder Casey Smallwood (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) got W&J on the board at the 4:22 mark, but OWU added two more goals in the final 3:07 to take an 8-2 lead after 15 minutes.
W&J tried to get back into the game following goals from senior attacker Mark Ringeling (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and freshman attacker Tim Angell (Andover, Mass./Governor's Academy) early in the second quarter to narrow the deficit to 9-4, but Short started a four-goal barrage to end the half 43 seconds after Ringeling’s tally.
Ohio Wesleyan ended the game with 12 unanswered goals. The Battling Bishops outshot the Presidents by a 51-22 margin and collected 10-of-18 faceoffs. Ryan McMahon turned back four shots in the first half to earn the win in goal for OWU.
Smallwood had two goals to lead W&J, while junior midfielder Dylan Haas (Damascus, Md./Poolesville) won eight faceoffs and picked up a team-high seven ground balls. Junior goalie Ran Kirby (Cleveland, Ohio/University School) suffered the loss after allowing 10 goals and making nine saves in 35-plus minutes of action. W&J used four different goalies during the match.
Washington & Jefferson (0-3) returns to action on Wednesday evening when hosting another NCAC opponent, Wooster, at 7:00 pm at Alexandre Stadium.
