Peddicord’s Late Goal Lifts W&J Past No. 17 Berry

WASHINGTON, Pa. - Washington & Jefferson junior Cody Peddicord (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) scored with 6:21 remaining in the match to help the Presidents knock off previously-undefeated and 17th-ranked Berry (Ga.) on Saturday afternoon in non-conference men’s soccer action at Alexandre Stadium.

The Presidents (1-4-1) won for the first time in 2012, while the Vikings’ record dropped to 7-1.  Berry, ranked in the NSCAA Top 25, is in its fourth and final NCAA Division III provisional year following its move from NAIA Division II.

Berry had a majority of the scoring chances in the first half, but W&J sophomore goalie Jon Best (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) collected four saves to keep the match scoreless.

W&J capitalized on the best scoring chance of the game in the 84th minute.  Sophomore forward Brian Hanna (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) made a slick move around a Viking defender and fired a shot that was batted down by Berry goalie Logan Hill.  Peddicord was there all alone for the rebound and fired home the eventual game winner.

Best made the lead hold up and finished with seven saves.  Hill stopped three shots for the Vikings.  Berry outshot the Presidents by a 13-9 margin, while both teams attempted four corner kicks.

W&J continues its three match home stand on Thursday when facing Franciscan at 7:00 pm.
