Presidents and Lady Titans Tie In New Wilmington

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson fought back from an early 2-0 hole and tied Westminster 2-2 following a pair of women’s soccer overtimes on Tuesday afternoon. 

The Lady Titans (4-5-3, 0-1-1 PAC) scored twice in the first 16 minutes to grab the lead.    Krista Edwards scored in the ninth minute before setting up Lizzie Barnhart for a goal seven minutes later. 

The Presidents (5-4-1, 1-0-1) narrowed the deficit to 2-1 seven minutes before halftime when senior forward Chrissy Marcius (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) dished to junior forward Holly Shipley (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) for her 12th goal of the season.

Senior midfielder Dawn Murphy (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) tied the match 1:59 later with her sixth goal of the year and the teams went into halftime tied 2-2. 

W&J had seven of the eight scoring chances in the second half and five of the seven shot attempts during the extra sessions, but could not beat Westminster goalkeeper Jenn Cantella, who finished with seven saves. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Mattie Follen (Moon, Pa./Moon) made one save for the Presidents, who outshot the Lady Titans 20-7.

W&J continues conference play on Saturday when battling Saint Vincent at 1:00 pm.
