Presidents Blank Bethany on the Road
BETHANY, W. Va. – Senior Holly Shipley (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) registered her fourth career hat trick as the Washington & Jefferson women’s soccer team blanked Bethany 4-0 Tuesday afternoon on the road.
Shipley began the scoring for the Presidents (9-8, 4-4 PAC) in the 11th minute, taking a pass from fellow senior Dani Span (Baden, Pa./Quigley Catholic) and firing her 15th goal of the season to the back of the net. Shipley produced another solid scoring chance just three minutes later as she rang a shot off the crossbar.
After 27 minutes expired in the first half, junior Jess Skovira (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) sent a corner kick into a scramble in front of the net. Senior Sarah Zeh (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) came up with the ball and collected her fifth tally of the season to put W&J ahead 2-0 over the Bison (3-15, 1-7 PAC).
With just under 10 minutes remaining in the opening stanza, Shipley recorded her second goal of the game as her corner deflected off a Bethany defender and found its way past the goal line.
Shipley found the back of the net once more in the 77th minute for her 17th goal of the season on a breakaway. Her 17 goals this fall marks a new single season-high for the W&J senior forward, besting the 16 she tallied a year ago. For her career, Shipley now owns 58 career goals, one behind tying for second all-time at W&J and four away from becoming the all-time leading goal scorer. Additionally, with her first goal this afternoon, she passed Jen Pergola for second all-time in career points (148).
Junior goalkeeper Mattie Follen (Moon, Pa./Moon) got the call in net and made three saves in the opening 45 minutes, while sophomore Sarah Youngblood (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) preserved the shutout in the second half.
Washington & Jefferson concludes the 2013 regular season when it travels to Greenville, Pa., this Saturday (Nov. 2) for a noon match against Thiel.
