Presidents Clinch PAC Women’s Soccer Top Seed With 5-0 Rout Of Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. – Washington and Jefferson College clinched an unbeaten regular season and the top seed for next week’s PAC Women’s Soccer Tournament after defeating Bethany 5-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Presidents (14-3-1, 8-0-1 PAC) finished the PAC regular-season in first place for the first time in school history.  Washington and Jefferson has not lost since Sept. 15 and holds a 12-0-1 record during that span.

W&J, the No. 9 team in the NSCAA Great Lakes Region poll, will now host Grove City, Westminster or Waynesburg Tuesday in the semifinals at Alexandre Stadium at 7:00 pm.  If W&J is victorious in the semifinals, the Presidents would host the championship match Saturday (time TBA).  W&J, the three-time defending league champion, defeated Westminster last year in the championship match at Alexandre Stadium 3-0.

Sophomore forward Holly Shipley (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) scored the lone goal of the first half in the 36th minute.  She now has a team-high 12 goals.

The lead grew to 2-0 in the 69th minute as freshman forward Tatum Marucci (Youngstown, Ohio/Poland Seminary) fired home a shot in the left corner of the goal.  Marucci then assisted on the Presidents’ next two goals, the first of which was scored by senior midfielder Vicki Kowalewski (Bethlehem, Pa./Notre Dame).  Junior Dawn Murphy (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) netted her goal in the 75th minute and the Bison yielded an own goal 38 seconds later to provide the final margin.

Freshman goalie Heather Betancourt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) notched her second shutout of the season after making seven saves.  W&J outshot BC 20-16.  Brittany Sadler stopped six shots for Bethany (8-8-1, 4-4-1 PAC).
