Presidents Close Regular Season With Victory At Penn State-Behrend
ERIE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team completed the regular-season portion of its schedule Sunday with its eighth-straight victory, a 7-4 triumph at Penn State-Behrend.
The Presidents (27-11, 18-6) will now set their sights on the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament beginning Thursday at Ross Memorial Park. No. 1 seed W&J will face fourth-seeded Saint Vincent (6:00 pm) after clinching the league's regular-season title for the second consecutive season on Saturday following a sweep of Westminster.
Junior first baseman Tyler Schultz (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) paced the Presidents with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate, three runs batted in and one run scored against the Lions.
W&J trailed 1-0 in the top of the third inning, but quickly took control of the game with a five-run frame. Junior right fielder Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) knotted the game at one with a sacrifice fly and two batters later, Schultz plated a pair with a single to right. Junior third baseman Kyle McLain (East Amherst, N.Y./Canisius) added a run-scoring single and Schultz touched home after a wild pitch.
The Presidents tacked on run in the fourth when senior center fielder Scott Brady (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) doubled to drive in junior left fielder Derek McIlvaine (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston). Schultz' RBI single in the seventh capped the scoring.
Junior right hander Mike Vizzini (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) tossed three innings in relief to earn his fourth victory. Vizzini allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out a pair. Senior right hander Corey Young (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) started the game and went three innings, fanning two, while allowing a pair of runs (one earned).
