Presidents Compete At 79th Annual Wilkes Open

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Four Washington and Jefferson College wrestlers competed in the 79th Annual Wilkes Open Wednesday at the Marts Center.  A total of 15 schools competed from NCAA Division I, III and III programs.

The Presidents recorded a pair of first-round victories, both of which came in the 157-pound bracket.  Junior Chris Leva (Perrineville, N.J./Notre Dame) pinned Randy Huber of Maryland-Baltimore County (6:53) in his opening bout before falling to Wilkes’ Kristopher Krawchuk in 43 seconds by fall.

Junior Brett Jeffries (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) also claimed a first-round win as he pinned George Simms III of Wilkes in 4:34.  Jeffries was then defeated by eventual champion, Shane Strumwasser of Columbia by technical fall (17-2; 4:35). Both Leva and Jeffries suffered losses in their first bouts in the consolation bracket.

W&J returns to action on Jan. 7 at the Gettysburg Quad where it will compete against Washington and Lee, Hunter and Gettysburg.
