Presidents Drop 60-51 Decision To Saint Vincent At Carey Center
LATROBE, Pa. -- Isaac Turner scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds and Saint Vincent pulled away from Washington & Jefferson late in the second half to earn a 60-51 PAC men's basketball victory on Wednesday night at the Carey Center.
The Bearcats (13-5, 8-1 PAC) built a 14-point halftime lead after holding the Presidents to only six field goals (6-of-30) during the opening 20 minutes. Turner scored 10 points in the first 10 minutes as SVC claimed a 21-9 advantage. Edmund Wright's three-pointer with 42 seconds left capped a 9-2 spurt to end the half for the 31-17 edge.
After falling behind 38-21, W&J clawed back into the game with a 20-5 run over a span of 10 minutes to narrow the gap to 43-41. Senior guard Zach Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) scored eight points during the rally which sophomore point guard Doug Johnson (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) capped on a jumper at the 6:54 mark.
However, Chris Klimchock scored on the ensuing possession and Turner followed with a three-pointer to stretch the lead back to seven (48-41). The Presidents (7-12, 5-5 PAC) closed to within five points twice in the final minute, but six Bearcat free throws sealed the win.
Both teams struggled shooting the basketball as W&J connected on 32 percent (19-of-60), while SVC shot 34 percent (20-of-59). W&J held a 48-40 rebounding advantage, but Saint Vincent canned 7-of-22 triples (W&J 1-of-8 from three-point range).
Bellhy (7-of-19 FG, 6-of-6 FT) paced the Presidents with 20 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Sophomore guard Mike Resnik (White Oak, Pa./McKeesport) added 11 points, nine boards and three steals.
Klimchock posted 17 points, four assists and three steals for the Bearcats, while Grant Latus ripped down a game-high 13 rebounds. SVC scored 19 points off 16 Presidents' turnovers.
W&J returns to action Saturday afternoon against Thiel (4:00 pm) on Alumni Day at the Henry Memorial Center.
