Presidents Earn Road Victory At Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College women’s basketball team won for the fourth time in its last five games, downing Grove City 54-40 on Wednesday night at Grove City College Arena.

The Presidents, who never trailed, upped their record to 10-4 (5-2 PAC), while Grove City fell to 5-6 (4-3 PAC).
Junior forward Chelsea Apke (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) posted a game-high 18 points on 9-of-14 shooting to pace W&J.  She also pulled down nine rebounds.

Apke jump started a 9-0 first-half surge with back-to-back baskets. Junior point guard Kara Seamon (Morgantown, W. Va./University) followed with a three-pointer and Apke capped the run with a layup to put W&J ahead 19-9.

Four minutes later, a jumper from Apke gave the Presidents their largest lead of the half at 12 points, but a three-pointer by Grove City’s Leah Gibson just before the halftime buzzer brought the Wolverines to within 25-16.

W&J scored 12 of the first 14 points during the second half as its advantage bulged to 17 points and the Presidents would lead by double figures the rest of the way.  Washington & Jefferson held the Wolverines to just two baskets over the final 8:53.

W&J limited Grove City to just 24 percent (14-57) shooting, the second-straight game it held its opponent under 30 percent from the field. The Presidents knocked down 32 percent (21-65) of their shots and held a slight 48-45 edge on the boards.

Senior guard Emily Abraham (Canfield, Ohio/Boardman) contributed 12 points (3-7 3PT) and seven rebounds, while Seamon added six points and four assists. Sophomore center Valerie Dunlap grabbed 13 boards and swatted away a career-best eight shots.

The PAC Sports Network will be broadcasting the Presidents’ next game (PACstream.net) on Saturday when they visit Bethany at 2:00 pm.
