Presidents End 2011 Softball Season in the Win Column
LATROBE, Pa. -- Sophomore second baseman Stephanie Zur (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) collected four hits and scored three runs during Washington & Jefferson season-ending softball doubleheader at Saint Vincent's Bearcat Field on Thursday, May 5.
The Presidents (7-22, 2-13 PAC) dropped a 7-2 decision to Saint Vincent (16-12, 6-10 PAC) in the first game, but closed their season on a winning note with a 3-1 triumph in game two. The win snapped a 14-game losing streak.
Zur went 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs in the second contest, while senior Victoria Doerschner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carrick) took the mound for her first career start and pitched six innings of one-run ball. She allowed eight hits and struck out three in her first collegiate victory.
Zur singled in the first and Doerschner followed with a double. Junior first baseman Brittany Swartzwelder (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) brought home both players with a single.
After SVC scored a run in the second, W&J plated the final run in the third when Zur singled and scored on Swartzwelder's groundout. Sophomore Erin Shuman (Chester, W.Va./Oak Glen) came on in the seventh to record the final three outs and earn the save.
The first three innings of game one were scoreless, but W&J scored in the fourth. The Zur-Swartzwelder combination was responsible again as Zur singled and came around to score on Swartzwelder's double.
The Bearcats went ahead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but W&J tied the game in the sixth as Doerschner led off with a single and scored on junior left fielder Taylor Warmbrodt's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) base hit. However, SVC struck for five runs in the bottom half to break the game open.
W&J had nine hits in the first game, two of which were collected by freshman pitcher Madison Rotto (Sarver, Pa./Freeport). Rotto took the loss in the pitching circle after allowing seven runs (four earned) on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. She struck out five and walked four.
