Presidents End Dual Meet Season With Wheeling Jesuit Split
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women’s swimming and diving team pulled out a 136-125 victory, but Wheeling Jesuit evened the meet by claiming a 161-100 men’s score on Senior Day Saturday at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.
The W&J women closed the dual-meet portion of their schedule with an 8-3 record, while the Presidents’ men finished 6-4. Both teams will be idle for 10 days to prepare for the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships (Feb. 13-16) at Grove City.
Sophomore Jessica Sweitzer (Laurel, Md./Seton Keough) continued her standout season for the W&J women by claiming four victories. She won the 50 (25.90), 100 (55.65) and 200 (1:59.29) freestyle events, while also leading to the 200 medley relay (1:57.04) to a meet-opening triumph.
Senior Jami Andrews (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) joined Sweitzer on the 200 medley relay and also was victorious in the 50 breaststroke (33.62).
The men’s squad had two individual victories as sophomore Ben Mancini (Oreland, Pa./Springfield Township) touched first in the 1650 freestyle (17:37.05), while freshman Anthony Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) notched the 200 freestyle (1:50.58).
Seniors Mike Johnson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) and Joey Weiland (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), sophomore Mike Magdic (Franklin Park, Pa./North Allegheny) and freshman Nicholas Gill (Aurora, Ohio/University School) combined to win the final race of the night, the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:31.20.
