Presidents Extend Win Streak After Shutting Out Saint Vincent
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Two second-half goals were enough for the Washington & Jefferson men’s soccer team to defeat visiting Saint Vincent 2-0 Tuesday night at Alexandre Stadium.
The Presidents (7-4, 2-0 PAC) extended their win streak to four games and collected their sixth shutout victory of the season.
Despite registering 10 shots in the first half, six of which were on goal, W&J was kept off the scoreboard. Goalkeeper Eric Houghton made six saves in the opening period for the Bearcats (2-9, 0-1).
Just over six minutes into the start of the second half, the Presidents tallied the game’s first goal. Senior Cody Peddicord (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) notched his fourth goal of the season off a cross in front of the net from freshman Justin Carter (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton). Junior Brian Hanna (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) also assisted on the goal. Peddicord’s 17th career goal moves him into a tie for eighth all time at W&J.
The Presidents recorded an insurance marker in the 72nd minute when senior Sam Sestito (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) scored his first goal of the fall off a rebound in front of the Bearcat net.
For the game, W&J outshot Saint Vincent 16-12 and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Juniors Jon Best (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and Ben Wilt (Butler, Pa./Hampton) both saw time in goal and share the shutout. Best played nearly 84 minutes making seven saves, while Wilt came into the game with just over six minutes remaining and made one stop.
Washington & Jefferson hits the road for a PAC match at Geneva this Saturday (Oct. 12) beginning at 2:30 pm.
