Presidents Fall In CWPA D3 Championship Semifinals
NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Isabelle Baneux scored with 43 seconds left to give host Connecticut College an 8-7 victory over Washington & Jefferson College Friday night in the semifinals of the CWPA Division III Women's Water Championship Tournament at Jane Caldwell Lott Natatorium.
The eighth-ranked Camels will meet three-time defending league champion Grove City in tomorrow's title game. W&J (10-16) will face Carthage in the third-place match at 10:30 am.
Washington & Jefferson led 3-2 at halftime and goals by juniors Kelsey Leis (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township) and Margot Wummer (Havertown, Pa./Germantown Academy) pushed the advantage to 5-2 early in the third quarter.
However, the Camels stormed back with four answered tallies. Back-to-back goals by sophomore Sara Boldt (Grand Haven, Mich./East Kentwood) halted CC's momentum and put the Presidents in front 7-6 with 6:57 left, but the Camels scored the final two goals to earn their first title game appearance.
Boldt paced the Presidents with four goals, while freshman Rachel Clauss (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) provided the team's other goal. Sophomore Charlotte Lima (Brooklyn, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) made seven saves in goal.
