Presidents Fall For First Time In 2011

UTICA, N.Y. – Mallory Mariano scored with 1:55 left in overtime to lift Utica to a 2-1 Empire 8 Conference field hockey victory over Washington and Jefferson on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers (5-2, 2-0 E8) have defeated both Stevens and W&J already this season.  The Ducks and Presidents played in the last four E8 title matches.

After a scoreless first half, Louise Steele-Norton put UC in front with a goal eight minutes into the second half.  Rebecca Corsones assisted on the tally.

W&J (5-1, 1-1 E8) fought back and tied the match just over five minutes later as junior forward Amanda Pflumm (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) scored on a rebound.

The game went to overtime thanks in part to sophomore goalie Harley Straub (Richfield, Pa./East Juniata), who made five saves in the final 20 minutes.  She finished with 12 saves overall.

Utica finished with a 21-11 shot advantage and a 14-9 edge in penalty corners.  Monica Storms collected eight saves as the winning goaltender.
