Presidents Fall To Gophers In Landmark Opener
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Goucher held Washington & Jefferson scoreless for the final 51 minutes and 47 seconds and earned a 10-1 victory in the Landmark Conference men’s lacrosse opener for both squads on Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.
The Gophers (2-6, 1-0) scored the first two goals of the match, but the Presidents (3-3, 0-1) narrowed the gap on sophomore midfielder Will Wagner’s (Riva, Md./South River) goal with 6:47 left in the first quarter.
Goucher dominated from that point; however, as Steve Patterson gave the Gophers a 3-1 lead on a late first-quarter goal. Max Roach and Zachary Fratella scored during the first eight minutes of the second period for a 5-1 halftime lead.
Sam Morgan set up three goals in the second half as the Gophers cruised behind a 47-17 shot advantage. Roach and Pierce Ingram both had hat tricks for Goucher, while Connor Mishaw made eight saves in goal.
Washington & Jefferson won 11-of-16 faceoffs and received 15 saves from sophomore goalie Conor Crowe (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion).
W&J looks to bounce back on Wednesday with a 3:00 pm non-conference home match with Frostburg State.
