Presidents Give Head Coach Ian McDonald His 200th Career Victory
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore forward Brian Hanna (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) scored in the 55th minute to help Washington & Jefferson College’s Ian McDonald earn his 200th career head coaching victory as the Presidents downed Franciscan 2-1 in non-conference men’s soccer action Thursday evening at Alexandre Stadium.
McDonald now owns a 200-170-29 record in his 22nd season as the leader of the Presidents’ men’s soccer program.
The Presidents (2-4-1) got on the board when a ball was sent into the box and misplayed by Franciscan goalie Chris McNamara. Hanna scooted behind McNamara and slammed home the match’s first goal into an empty net.
Junior forward Cody Peddicord (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) was brought down in the box in the 73rd minute and was awarded a penalty kick. He slid a low shot past McNamara for a two-goal edge.
Franciscan made a game of it late by scoring with two minutes left. The Barons then had a point blank shot a minute later, but freshman goalkeeper Josh Winters (Mocksville, N.C./Calvary Baptist Day) made the save.
W&J had nearly every scoring chance in the match, holding a 34-7 shot advantage. Hanna and Peddicord both racked up seven shot attempts. Sophomore goalkeeper Jon Best (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) played the first 73 minutes and posted three saves.
W&J opens Presidents’ Athletic Conference play on Saturday when hosting Geneva at 1:30 pm.
