Presidents' Golf Places Sixth At Mason-Dixon Classic
ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson placed sixth of 15 teams this weekend at the two-day, 36-hole Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic hosted by McDaniel at The Bridges Golf Club (Par 72 - 6,713 yards).
The Presidents were in second place after carding 307 strokes during Saturday's opening round, but fell to sixth place following Sunday's 317 team score. McDaniel won the team title with 604 strokes (298-306), while Gettysburg (612), Franklin & Marshall (613), McDaniel "B" (623) and Susquehanna (623) also finished ahead of W&J in the standings. Washington & Jefferson was the lone PAC school competing.
Steven Kluemper of Centenary (N.J.) earned medalist honors after back-to-back rounds of 71. He was the only player in the 74-man field to finish under par.
W&J was led by the sophomore duo of Evan Lestini (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) and Tim Novic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), who tied for 11th place. Lestini shot 75 Saturday and 77 Sunday, while Novic followed Saturday's one over-par round of 73 with 79 strokes Sunday.
Freshman Hunter Bagiatis (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) tied for 12th place at 157 (77-80), while senior Colin Izzo (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) tied for 44th place with 163 shots (82-81). Junior Ryan Mazza (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) rounded out the W&J players in a 48th-place tie. He shot 82 both days.
Washington & Jefferson hosts its lone tournament of the 2013-14 season on Oct. 13-14, the Peter C. Rossin Memorial at Southpointe Golf Club.
