Presidents Hold Off Colonels
DANVILLE, Ky. -- Senior midfielder Brittney Oake (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) scored four goals, including two during a key stretch in the second half, to help Washington & Jefferson record an 8-7 women's lacrosse victory at Centre (Ky.) on Monday evening.
The Presidents (4-1) held a 4-2 halftime lead after taking advantage of two goals on free-position shots. Oake netted two goals during the first half, while senior defender Kerri Nunnamaker (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and junior midfielder Brittany Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) both added scores.
The Colonels (7-3) dominated the first 15 minutes of the second half, scoring three times to claim a 5-4 advantage following a Sarah Mastey goal at the 15:28 mark.
However, W&J quickly regrouped and Fradkin tied the match just 41 seconds later. That goal ignited a four-goal spurt over the next eight minutes which provided the difference in the final outcome. Oake's goal at the 12:28 mark put W&J in front for good and she added another two minutes later for a two-goal cushion. Senior midfielder Elizabeth Turcik (Ligonier, Pa./Miss Halls School) tacked on the final goal of the run with 6:22 remaining.
Centre rebounded to trim the gap to one with 45 seconds left, but Fradkin controlled the ensuing draw and W&J was able to run out the clock.
Junior goalie Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) finished the match with 11 saves for the Presidents, who were outshot by a 24-19 margin. W&J used a 13-5 draw control edge and overcame Mastey's four-goal, one-assist effort.
The Presidents will be back in action Thursday at Gwynedd-Mercy (4:00 pm).
