Presidents Open Fall Season in Erie

ERIE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's golf team opened its 2011-12 season this weekend at the two-day Mercyhurst Fall Invitational.  The Presidents placed seventh of nine teams after Sunday's final round with a two-day total of 740 strokes (368-372). 

The tournament field consisted of seven NAIA or NCAA Division II programs and Presidents' Athletic Conference members W&J and Westminster.

Walsh University shot back-to-back team scores of 315 to win the title.  Wheeling Jesuit (317-319) was six strokes behind followed by the host Lakers (641), Seton Hill (666), Clarion (682), Lake Erie (705), W&J, Westminster (748) and Charleston (913).

Mercyhurst's Caitlin Kempton won the individual title among the 53 golfers.  She carded a total of 150 strokes (77-73) to top a pair of Wheeling Jesuit golfers by five strokes.

W&J was led by Catherine Robinson, who posted a score of 172 (82-90) to tie for 22nd place.  Jennifer Suder finished in a 31st-place tie with 181 strokes (94-87), while Tara Fatula notched 192 shots (100-92) and tied for 39th place.  Katelynn Vannoy was 44th in the standings after shooting 195 (92-103) in the two days of competition.

The Presidents will be back in action on Sept. 19 at the Saint Vincent Invitational.
