Presidents Open Spring Season In Fifth At McDaniel
ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College claimed fifth place in the 13-team field this weekend at the 36-hole McDaniel Spring Men's Golf Invitational at The Bridges Golf Club (Par 72, 6,713 yards).
The Presidents carded a two-day score of 634 strokes, including an opening-round 308 on Saturday. W&J finished 26 shots behind tournament winner St. John Fisher (608--303-305).
New York University was second with 616 strokes (302-314) followed by McDaniel (620--314-306), Franklin & Marshall (629--309-320) and W&J. Rochester was tied with W&J after round one, but forced out of the team standings after two players withdrew because of illness.
St. John Fisher's Chris Blyth earned medalist honors in the 66-player field after shooting a five-over par score of 149 (75-74).
W&J was led by freshman Evan Lestini (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette), who tied for 12th place with 155 strokes (76-79). Senior Colin Izzo (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) was one stroke behind Lestini with a total of 156 (76-80) and tied for 14th place.
Sophomore Ryan Mazza (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) tied for 22nd place with 159 shots (77-82) and freshman Tim Novic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) turned in a 36-hole score of 164 (79-85) to tie for 34th place. Freshman Andrew Miller (Burgettstown, Pa./Burgettstown) carded 174 strokes (85-89) and tied for 56th place.
W&J is back in action next weekend at Hershey Country Club to compete in the 36-hole Mid-Atlantic Regional.
