Presidents Outslug La Roche 10-8
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Juniors D.J. Michalski (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) combined to drive in seven runs Sunday as the Washington & Jefferson College baseball team earned a 10-8 victory at La Roche.
Staniscia went 3-for-5 at the plate and knocked in four, while Michalski reached base four times, including three hits, and collected three RBI.
Staniscia got the Presidents on the board in the first inning with a run-scoring groundout and Michalski raced home on a wild pitch to give W&J a 2-0 lead.
W&J added three more runs in the second. Michalski was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Staniscia followed by lining a two-run single to left field. The duo both plated runs on base hits in the fourth as the Presidents built a 9-2 lead.
However, La Roche responded by scoring three times in the sixth, including a two-run triple from Darryl Robinson. Jon Watson’s two-run home run in the ninth inning made the score 10-8, but junior right hander Mike Vizzini (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) settled down to retire the next three batters and preserve W&J’s victory.
Vizzini earned his second save during 1 2/3 innings of work (one strikeout), while senior right hander Corey Young (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) picked up his first victory in his first start of the spring. Young allowed only one unearned run on two hits in three innings.
Seniors Scott Brady (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and Scott Liller (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) both scored three runs, while junior left fielder Derek McIlvaine (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) collected a pair of hits.
Robinson went 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs to pace the Red Hawks’ offense. Ian Kelly suffered the loss on the mound after surrendering five earned runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings.
W&J (21-11, 15-6 PAC) concludes its five-game, non-conference road trip on Tuesday at Muskingum at 4:00 pm.
