Presidents Place Sixth At Mid-Atlantic Regional
HERSHEY, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's golf team posted a two-day score of 671 (327-344) to place sixth of 14 teams following Monday's final round of the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Regional at Hershey Country Club.
St. John Fisher (638) ran away with the team title, while Franklin & Marshall (651) and McDaniel (661) rounded out the top three teams. W&J's team score edged out four teams (Carnegie Mellon and Rochester, Wesley and Gettysburg) for sixth by one stroke.
The Presidents, who were the only PAC team competing, were led by sophomore Colin Izzo's (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) eighth-place finish in the 73-golfer field. Izzo carded 160 strokes (81-79) on the Par 71 course which measured 7,061 yards.
Freshman Matthew Long (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Notre Dame) notched the Presidents' best Sunday round with 77 strokes and tied for 18th place overall with 166 shots (77-89). Classmates Matthew Stearns (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) and Ryan Mazza (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) were 10 strokes behind Long in 50th place. Stearns carded 87 in day one and 89 on Monday, while Mazza shot 82 Sunday and 94 this afternoon.
Senior Pete Petrides (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville) tied for 58th place with 177 strokes (90-87).
Franklin & Marshall's Cameron Warner collected a nine-over par score of 151 (78-73) to earn medalist honors.
W&J is back in action this weekend at the Carnegie Mellon Edward Jones Shootout at the Links of Spring Church in Apollo, Pa.
