Presidents Post Road Shutout At Muskingum
NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- Three Washington & Jefferson pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Presidents' baseball team blanked Muskingum 2-0 at Mose Morehead Field on Tuesday.
Junior right hander Mike Vizzini (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) went the first five innings on the mound to earn his third victory. Vizzini struck out a pair, while allowing just one hit. Classmate Eddie Nogay (Weirton, W. Va./Madonna) fired three scoreless frames, striking out seven, while junior right hander Randy Risch (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) pitched the ninth inning to earn his first save.
Junior first baseman D.J. Michalski (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) reached base three times, including a pair of hits, to pace the Presidents' offense. Michalski also scored a run, while junior catcher Ronny Peirish (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) collected the lone RBI for W&J.
Peirish gave the Presidents a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning by plating Michalski with a sacrifice fly. Michalski doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on junior right fielder Josh Staniscia's (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) base hit.
W&J added its second run in the fifth as junior third baseman Kyle McLain (East Amherst, N.Y./Canisius) scored on a passed ball.
Matt Free took the loss for the Muskies after giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits in seven innings. Wes Fauver led the Muskingum offense with a pair of singles.
W&J (22-11, 15-6 PAC) returns to Ross Memorial Park on Thursday for a non-conference game with Frostburg State beginning at 4:30 pm.
