Presidents Post Three-Straight Wins At Home Tournament
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College senior Sarah Cull (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) had a hat trick in every match as the Presidents racked up three-straight women’s water polo victories at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.
On Saturday morning, W&J (4-1) rallied to notch a 9-8 victory over Macalester (Minn.) before topping Wheaton (Ill.) in the afternoon 12-9. The Presidents, who are off to their second-straight 4-1 start to a season, ignited the win streak with a 16-11 triumph over Chatham on Friday night.
Against Wheaton, W&J started strong with a 5-1 lead after one quarter of play. The Thunder closed to within 6-5 after three periods, but sophomore Catherine Villa’s (Poway Calif./Poway) goal with 1:35 remaining gave W&J an 11-9 advantage and the hosts held on.
Cull scored all three of her goals in the final quarter to lead the Presidents. Villa also netted three goals, while sophomore Dana Wieber (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) scored both of her goals in the opening period. Freshman Charlotte Lima (Brooklyn, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) played a solid game as the goalie, making 13 saves.
Washington & Jefferson trailed 6-3 against Macalester before storming back with six fourth-quarter goals to collect a 9-8 win. The Presidents scored the first six goals of the final period, two each scored by Villa and freshman Sara Boldt (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood).
Wieber and senior Brittany Vogel (Butler, Pa./Butler) both added goals for the Presidents in the victory.
In the victory over Chatham, Washington & Jefferson led 4-0 after the first quarter and never looked back. The Cougars were unable to bring the deficit to under two at any point during the final three quarters.
Boldt paced the offensive attack with four tallies, while Wieber and freshman Jessica Sweitzer (Poolesville, Md./Quince Orchard) both contributed two goals.
The Presidents play their final match of the West/Central Tournament at 6:00 pm against Carthage.
