Presidents Pound Pitt-Greensburg For First Win
WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Washington & Jefferson College women’s basketball team thumped Pitt-Greensburg 90-46 in the first round of the W&J Tip-Off Tournament to earn its first win of the season on Friday night.
Freshman Valerie Dunlap (Hostetter, Pa./Latrobe) posted the first double-double of her career, tallying 10 points (4-8 FG) and 15 rebounds, including 11 in the second half.
After falling behind 5-0, the Presidents broke the game open with a 21-2 run spanning 7:53. W&J took a 14-point lead and never led by less than 10 the rest of the way. Its largest lead was 82-35, a 47-point advantage, late in the second half.
All 13 Presidents that saw action scored at least two points, led by senior Courtney Walsh (Mill-Hall, Pa./Central Mountain), who netted 14. Walsh also added three rebounds and one steal.
Senior Ashley Kirkpatrick (Sharon, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) poured in 12 points, while sophomore Alexa Burzese (Sewickly, Pa./Quaker Valley) added 11. Kirkpatrick also pulled down eight rebounds and swiped three steals.
W&J shot 45 percent from the field (35-77) compared to the Bobcats' 27 percent (15-55). The Presidents forced 28 turnovers, netting 38 points of the miscues.
W&J will face Otterbein in the championship game of the W&J Tip-Off Tournament at 4:00 pm on Saturday at the Henry Memorial Center. Pitt-Greensburg will play Defiance, which fell 58-49 to Otterbein, in the tournament’s consolation game at 2:00 pm.
