Presidents Rally For Doubleheader Split

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally from a three-run deficit and defeat Saint Vincent 8-7 in game two of a Presidents’ Athletic Conference softball doubleheader in Latrobe on Saturday afternoon.  The Bearcats claimed game one by a score of 4-3.

W&J moved its record to 12-14 overall and 6-4 in PAC play, while SVC now stands at 18-12 and 7-3 in the PAC.

The Presidents trailed by three in game two entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but freshman right fielder Chalese Wilson (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) cut the deficit to one with a two-run single.  Sophomore shortstop Kelsey Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) knotted the game with an RBI single two batters later and then junior second baseman Stephanie Zur (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) worked a bases-loaded walk to give W&J the lead.

Sophomore pitcher Madison Rotto (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) retired the Bearcats in order in the seventh to earn her eighth victory of the season.  Rotto pitched four innings in relief and allowed two earned runs while striking out a pair.

Cunningham led W&J at the plate with three hits and two RBI, while freshman third baseman Sadie Marak (Butler, Pa./Butler) added a pair of base hits.

SVC needed a seventh-inning rally to take game one.  Maria Adams scored the game-winning run as the Bearcats tallied three runs in the inning for the walk-off victory. Marak was 2-for-3 with three RBI to pace W&J during game one.

W&J is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Frostburg State at Brooks Park beginning at 1:00 pm.
