Presidents Rally For Doubleheader Split At Case Western Reserve
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Washington & Jefferson scored four times in the ninth inning to rally from a three-run deficit and defeat Case Western Reserve 8-7 in game two of a non-conference baseball doubleheader Saturday at Nobby’s Ballpark. The Spartans opened the day with a 13-1 triumph.
Senior center fielder Scott Brady (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) singled and advanced to second on a Spartan error to start the ninth inning of the nightcap. Freshman shortstop Michael Ruffing (East Brunswick, Ohio/St. Ignatius) followed with a base hit and three batters later, junior right fielder Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) delivered a bases-loaded single that plated Brady. After junior catcher Ronny Peirish (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) knotted the game at 7-7 with a two-run double, classmate Kyle McLain (East Amherst, N.Y./Canisius) put the Presidents in front with an RBI groundout.
McLain then took the mound in the bottom of the ninth inning and held off a two-out threat from the Spartans by getting William Meador to line out to end the game.

Juniors D.J. Michalski (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Tyler Schultz (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) both provided RBI singles to give W&J a 2-0 lead after one inning.
The Presidents doubled their lead in the third as Schultz knocked in Staniscia with a sacrifice fly and junior left fielder Derek McIlvaine (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) drove in Peirish with a base hit.
Robert Winemiller’s two-run double cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning. Case then plated four runs in the sixth to take a 7-4 edge before the Presidents’ four-run, ninth-inning rally.
Staniscia went 3-for-5 at the plate and scored twice, while Peirish and Schultz both collected two hits and a pair of RBI. Sophomore right hander Tyler Dean (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) started the game on the mound for W&J and allowed three earned runs on four hits, while striking out six in five innings.
Josh Suvak took the loss for the Spartans after giving up four earned runs in 2 1/3 innings in relief.
Case Western Reserve took a 2-0 lead after two innings and then scored seven times in the third to run away with the victory during game one. Winemiller went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Andrew Frey recorded three hits to pace the Spartan offense. Jarrett Gish upped his record to 6-0 by firing five scoreless innings. Gish struck out five and scattered three hits.
