Presidents Rally For Two Wins At W&J Tournament

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team twice rallied from 2-1 deficits and defeated both Allegheny and Muskingum in a pair of thrilling five-set matches on day two of the Presidents' home tournament at the Henry Memorial Center on Sunday.

The Presidents (4-1) earned a 3-2 win over Allegheny in its first match of the day, marking the first time since October 26, 2010 that W&J won a match that went to five sets.  Set scores were 25-16, 23-25, 17-25, 25-12, and 15-8.

W&J’s victory over Muskingum was the first against the Muskies in program history. The Presidents had previously been 0-13 against Muskingum. Set scores for the match were 25-21, 20-25, 17-25, 25-23 and 15-11.

Sophomore Lindsey Bennett (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) collected 21 kills to lead W&J offensively.  She also added 22 digs and 10 blocks.  Bennett provided the final point of both matches with a block.

Freshman Nicole Bishwaty (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) contributed 25 digs, 17 kills and five aces, while classmate Courtney Grdina (Stow, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) added 31 digs.

Sophomore Megan Stoehr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) distributed 66 assists along with 16 digs, four blocks and three aces. Junior Tori Clark (Fall Branch, Tenn./Sullivan South) totalled 27 kills, 17 digs and four blocks.

The Presidents, who are off to a 4-1 start for the first time 2007 when they began the season 5-1, will embark on a six-match road trip that begins with a Presidents’ Athletic Conference dual meet with Geneva and Chatham in Pittsburgh on Sept. 11.
