Presidents Ride Offense Past Waynesburg
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College totaled 22 runs on 25 hits during a Presidents' Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader sweep of Waynesburg Tuesday at Ross Memorial Park. The Presidents cruised 9-2 in game one before rolling to a 13-4 victory in the nightcap.
W&J (10-5, 7-1) scored three runs during each of the first three innings to take control of game one. Junior third baseman Kyle McLain (East Amherst, N.Y./Canisius) doubled home a pair of runs with two outs and sophomore designated hitter John Kutzfara (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth) followed with a double during the first inning.
Junior right fielder Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) recorded RBI singles during the second and third innings, while senior second baseman Scott Liller (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) added a run-scoring base hit in the third.
Playing with a 9-0 lead, junior right hander Eddie Nogay (Weirton, W. Va./Madonna) cruised to his fifth victory. Nogay’s scoreless inning streak came to an end at 17 2/3 innings after Clay Roman plated a run with a fifth-inning single. Nogay allowed two runs overall, while striking out seven in six innings, to improve his career record to 15-0.
J. Jay Paskert suffered his second loss for Waynesburg after giving up up nine runs (six earned) on nine hits in three innings of work.
The Presidents stormed in front of the Yellow Jackets early once again during game two, plating seven runs on eight hits in the first. The first seven batters reached base safely and W&J sent 12 hitters to plate overall.
W&J built an 11-0 lead before Waynesburg struck for four unearned runs in the fourth off junior starting pitcher Randy Risch (Grove City, Pa./Grove City). However, the Presidents tacked on single runs during the fifth and sixth and a pair of relievers threw three scoreless frames to preserve the victory.
Risch earned his first win of the spring. He struck out four, while allowing six hits in four innings. Sophomore right hander Tyler Dean (Valencia, Pa./Mars) tossed two shutout innings and McLain struck out the side in the seventh.
McLain and juniors D.J. Michalski (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), Tyler Schultz (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville), Ronny Peirish (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Derek McIlvaine (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) all recorded two hits during game two. McLain collected a pair of two-RBI performances during the twinbill, while Staniscia knocked in a pair and scored three times.
Roman led the Yellow Jackets’ offensively with five hits in eight at bats.
W&J travels north to Grove City to face the Wolverines Friday at 4:00 pm in another PAC game.
