Presidents Round Out Successful Weekend With Overtime Triumph
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore Catherine Villa (Poway, Calif./Poway) scored four goals, including once in overtime, to help Washington & Jefferson raise its win streak to four after edging Carthage 8-5 in overtime Saturday night at the Henry Memorial Natatorium at the West at Central Crossover Tournament.
The Presidents (5-1) completed the weekend tournament with a 4-1 record.
W&J raced out to a 3-1 lead after one period; however, the Lady Reds fought back to grab a 4-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Villa scored twice in a 50-second span to put W&J back on top, but Carthage forced overtime with a goal at the 1:09 mark.
Senior Sarah Cull (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) put W&J ahead for good and sophomore Dana Wieber (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) followed with a goal five seconds before the teams traded ends of the pool. Villa tacked on an insurance goal as W&J earned its second-straight 5-1 start to a season.
Cull finished with a pair of goals, while freshman Sara Boldt (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) also scored during the first quarter.
W&J is idle for two weeks, but returns to action on March 31 at Grove City with matches against Gannon (11:30 am) and Notre Dame College (3:00 pm).
