Presidents Score Twice Late For Fourth-Straight Victory

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Junior forward Holly Shipley (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) scored her 11th goal of the season and senior defender Emma Donahey (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton Central) added an insurance goal late to help Washington & Jefferson knock off Franciscan 2-0 in women’s soccer action Thursday night at Alexandre Stadium.

The Presidents (4-4) evened their record back to .500 after dropping their first four matches of the season.  W&J opens Presidents’ Athletic Conference play Saturday versus Geneva (11:00 am).

W&J dominated possession for most of the game, but didn’t get on the scoreboard until Shipley received a lead pass from junior midfielder Sarah Zeh (Canonsburg, Pa/Canon-McMillan) and lifted a shot past goalkeeper Michele Volk.

Shipley and senior forward Chrissy Marcius (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) assisted on Donahey’s goal which pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 87th minute.

Washington & Jefferson outshot the Barons (2-7-2) by a 19-4 count.  Sophomore goalie Mattie Follen (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) stopped the only shot on goal that she faced the entire 90 minutes, while Volk amassed 11 saves in the loss.  Shipley had six shots to lead the Presidents.
