Presidents Split During Second Day In Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Washington & Jefferson routed Thomas (Maine) 15-0, but lost in the final inning to Benedictine (Ill.) 7-6 on Sunday on its second day of play the National Training Center Softball Games. 

The Presidents (4-4) banged out 15 hits in the Thomas victory, including a 3-for-3 effort by junior shortstop Kelsey Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township).  Cunningham reached base five times as she also drew a pair of walks. 

Junior pitcher Madison Rotto (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) fired the shutout and struck out a career-high 11 batters. 

Washington & Jefferson trailed 6-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning against Benedictine, but Rotto quickly tied the game with a three-run homer.  Benedictine scored in the seventh inning and recorded the final three outs to preserve the win. 

The Presidents, who totaled 26 hits during the two games, play eighth-ranked Tufts (1:00 pm) and Gallaudet (3:00 pm) Monday.
