Presidents Split Final Home Matches of Fall
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Junior Mike Magdic (Franklin Park, Pa./North Allegheny) racked up five-goal and six-goal efforts as Washington & Jefferson College split a pair of men's water polo matches Sunday at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.
The ninth-ranked Presidents (11-12) defeated Salem International by a 17-13 margin before falling to Mercyhurst 19-13 during the afternoon. W&J's 11 victories are the most by the program since 2004.
Magdic netted five goals against Salem International, including four during the Presidents' nine-goal third quarter which broke the game open. Junior Carl Krause (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) and freshman Nick Willison (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) both added three tallies.
In the loss to the Lakers, Magdic fired in six goals, but the Presidents came up just short. W&J led 7-5 after one quarter, but Mercyhurst outscored the Presidents in each of the final three periods, including a 5-0 fourth-quarter finish.
Willson scored three times once again, while sophomore Kevin Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) notched a pair. Sophomore Anthony Squeglia (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) notched six saves in goal for W&J.
Washington & Jefferson will next compete at the Division III Championships at Johns Hopkins (Oct. 19-20).
