Presidents Stretch Win Streak To Five
LATROBE, Pa. -- Senior midfielder Brittney Oake (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery Prep) and junior midfielder Brittany Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md./St. Paul's School) both fired in four goals to lead the Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse team to a 16-9 victory at Saint Vincent on Tuesday evening.
The Presidents (10-3) have now won five consecutive games. W&J also clinched its third consecutive 10-plus win season (13-4 records in 2010 and 2011).
W&J appeared ready to run away from the Bearcats (5-6) in the first half after scoring three of the first four goals, but that was as large of a lead as the Presidents would get in the opening 30 minutes. Maggie Garvey scored for SVC at the 1:28 mark to bring the Bearcats to within 7-6 at halftime.
The Presidents finally took control of the match with the first five goals of the second half starting with senior midfielder Liz Turcik's (Ligonier, Pa./Miss Halls School) tally 53 seconds in. Saint Vincent answered with three-straight goals during a a two-minute span, but senior attacker Lauren Novak (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) scored with 6:24 remaining to end the SVC spurt. Fradkin netted two insurance goals in the final five minutes.
Fradkin and Oake combined for 18 shot attempts and seven draw controls. Oake now has 179 career goals.
Novak added three goals, while Turcik scored twice. Junior goalie Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) made seven saves for the Presidents, who held advantages in shots (33-19) and draw controls (17-10).
W&J looks to raise its win streak to six on Saturday when hosting Thiel on Senior Day at Alexandre Stadium (3:00 pm).
