Presidents Suffer First Setback of the Season
WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson men’s soccer team suffered a 5-1 loss to visiting Denison Saturday afternoon, the Presidents' first loss of the season.
Shots for the first half were even at six apiece, but the Big Red (3-0-1) capitalized on chances and had a little bit of luck fall their way to take a 2-0 lead into the break. Evan Porter knocked in a rebound in front of the net to open the scoring 20 minutes into the start of the game. Denison registered its second goal just before the half on an own goal by W&J.
The Big Red notched two more goals early in the second half, just four minutes apart to go ahead 4-0. W&J managed to get on the board in the 78th minute when senior forward Cody Peddicord (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) sent home a successful penalty kick, his first goal of the season. Denison added one more score with less than four minutes remaining for the final five goal tally.
Junior Jon Best (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) got the start in goal for the Presidents and was replaced by Ben Wilt (Butler, Pa./Hampton) at the 56-minute mark. Josh Winters (Mocksville, N.C./Calvary Baptist Day) finished time in goal for W&J, subbing in with 13 minutes left on the clock. For the game, the Big Red outshot the Presidents 16-8.
Washington & Jefferson returns to the pitch this Tuesday (Sept. 10) when it travels to Pitt-Greensburg for a 4:00 pm match.
