Presidents Top Saint Vincent 8-4
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson improved to 12-0 at Ross Memorial Park this spring after defeating Saint Vincent 8-4 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon.
Junior right-hander Brian O’Neill (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) struck out six during eight innings of work to up his record to 5-1. O’Neill scattered five hits, while surrendering two earned runs.
Freshman shortstop Michael Ruffing (Brunswick, Ohio/St. Ignatius) paced the Presidents’ offense with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate. He also drove in two runs, while scoring twice and stealing a pair of bases.
Ruffing tripled with one out in the third and scored the game’s first run after senior second baseman Scott Liller’s (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) RBI single. Three batters later, junior centerfielder Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) plated Liller with a sacrifice fly.
W&J pushed the lead to 4-0 in the fifth as Ruffing singled and scored on a throwing error, while Staniscia again knocked in Liller, this time with a base hit.
Grant Krally’s RBI single in the top of the sixth got SVC (13-12, 9-4) on the board, but Ruffing quickly answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-out, two-run single to right-center field.
The Presidents added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh when junior third baseman Kyle McLain (East Amherst, N.Y./Canisius) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, while classmate Tyler Schultz (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) capped the scoring with a RBI single.
Staniscia and Schultz both collected two hits and scored once. Staniscia also knocked in a pair, while Liller touched home twice.
Alex Kozusko took the loss for SVC after allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits in five innings of work. A.J. Kavinsky was the lone Bearcat with a multi-hit performance at the plate.
W&J (18-10, 14-6) returns to Ross Memorial Park on Wednesday to face Thomas More at 4:00 pm.
