Presidents Topped By Ducks On Homecoming
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Stevens Institute of Technology collected 16 shots on goal and attempted 17 penalty corners during a 4-2 Empire 8 Conference field hockey victory over Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday morning at Cameron Stadium.
With the victory, Stevens (11-6, 6-0) clinched the Empire 8 regular season title and hosting rights for the league tournament, while W&J (10-7, 3-3) fell into a tie for fourth place.
After the Ducks grabbed an early lead, senior Jennifer Marabella (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) knotted the game 1-1 by deflecting a pass from classmate Erin Barno (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) into the cage.
Just over three minutes later, Stevens reclaimed the lead when Dailyn Brook netted her second goal of the match. Marguerite Chavez and Megan Traub both tallied goals in a three-minute span just after halftime to help the Ducks build a three-goal advantage.
Sophomore Catherine Beaudoin (Barkhamsted, Conn./North Western Regional) cut the lead down to two with six minutes remaining in regulation, but that is as close as W&J would get.
Freshman goalkeeper Kira Bunker (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) stopped a career-high 11 shots, while Kaitlin McClymont posted eight saves for the Ducks.
W&J closes out its regular season on Saturday at Cameron Stadium against Elmira. The team will honor its six seniors prior to the match.
