Presidents Upended At Kenyon 9-7; Eck Scores 100th Career Goal
GAMBIER, Ohio -- Kenyon netted six of the seven goals scored during the third quarter to record a 9-7 non-conference men’s lacrosse victory over Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday afternoon at McBride Field.
W&J senior attacker Joseph Eck (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) tallied three goals and two assists, while attempting 11 shots. His goal at the 11:27 mark of the fourth quarter was the 100th of his career which moved him past Andrew Wallick ’12 for second place on the program’s all-time goal list.
The Lords (1-2), who earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament field a year ago, received multi-goal efforts from four different players (Justin Coleman, Chris Pappalardo, Mackie Avis and Trey Trudell).
W&J (1-1) scored the opening goal at the 7:22 mark of the first quarter when sophomore attacker Tim Angell (Andover, Mass./Governor’s Academy) set up sophomore midfielder Will Wagner (Riva, Md./South River) for his first goal of the 2013 season.
The teams traded goals for the remainder of the half and went to the locker rooms tied 3-3 after Angell scored off a feed from Eck 69 seconds before halftime.
Kenyon changed the momentum of the match with the six-goal outburst during the third period. Avis fired in the final two goals for a 9-4 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes.
The Presidents answered back with the first three goals of the fourth quarter, two of which were finished by Eck, to close to within 9-7 with seven minutes left. However, that was as close as the Presidents would get as Eck hit the post with two minutes left and a shot by junior midfielder Casey Smallwood (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) was turned away by KC goalie Fletcher Franklin.
Franklin amassed nine saves for the Lords, who held a 34-33 edge in shots. Kenyon won 10-of-17 faceoffs and grabbed a 35-26 advantage in ground balls.
Angell finished with two goals and one assist for the Presidents, while freshman midfielder Zachary Fredericks (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) had one goal and one assist. Sophomore goalie Conor Crowe (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) suffered the loss despite producing 12 saves.
W&J opens its 2013 home schedule on Saturday when La Roche comes to Alexandre Stadium for a 1:00 pm match.
