Presidents' Volleyball Claims La Roche Tournament Title
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson defeated Franciscan and the host Redhawks by 3-0 margins to claim the La Roche Volleyball Tournament championship on Saturday afternoon. The Presidents open the season 4-0 for the first time since 1998.
Senior outside hitter Samantha Chorney (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) and sophomore right-side hitter Nicole Bishwaty (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) helped the Presidents earn the title by totaling 16 and 15 kills, respectively, in the two matches. Bishwaty added eight digs in the win over Franciscan.
Junior middle hitter Lindsey Bennett (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) had eight total blocks (2 solo) in the championship match, while junior setter Megan Stoehr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and freshman Michealia Skleres (Andover, Ohio/Pymatuning Valley) combined for 32 assists against the Redhawks and 35 versus the Barons. Bennett also picked up seven kills against Franciscan.
Freshman outside hitter Taylor Freeman (Cresson, Pa./Penn Cambria) added seven kills in the title game.
W&J opens its 2013 home and PAC schedules on Tuesday when hosting Geneva at 7:00 pm at the Henry Memorial Center.
