Princeton Defeats W&J In Southern Championship Opener

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The 15th-ranked Princeton University men's water polo team opened the 2011 Southern Division Championships with a 16-5 home victory over Washington & Jefferson College on Friday evening.
Princeton (19-7) raced out to a 10-0 halftime lead and cruised to the win. A total of 13 different Tigers scored in the victory led by Matt Weber's three tallies.
W&J (7-10) was paced junior Joey Weiland's (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) two-goal effort. Junior Cameron Chaves (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) and freshman Carl Krause (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) and Sam Taylor (Columbia, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) all added one goal.
Sophomore Dan Francisco (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) and freshman Chris DeNunzio (Greenwich, Conn./Canterbury) split time as goalies. Francisco had six saves, while DeNunzio turned back three Tiger shots.
W&J will face George Washington, Johns Hopkins or Gannon in its second match Saturday at 6:40 pm.
