Ran Kirby Named Landmark Conference Defensive Player of Week

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College junior goalie Ran Kirby (Cleveland, Ohio/University School) was selected as the Landmark Conference Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Kirby becomes the first player in W&J lacrosse history to earn a Landmark Conference Player of the Week award as the Presidents are competing in the league for the first time this spring.  Landmark Conference schools sponsoring men’s lacrosse include: Catholic, Drew, Goucher, Scranton, Susquehanna, US Merchant Marine Academy and W&J.

Kirby collected 35 saves during a 1-1 week for the Presidents.  On Saturday, amassed 19 stops as Washington & Jefferson topped Marymount (Va.) 10-7.  Kirby made several key saves in the fourth quarter to help preserve the win.  He stopped eight shots in the final 15 minutes.

Kirby also recently became the Presidents’ all-time saves leader.  In 38 career appearances, Kirby has produced 464 career saves.  He is on pace to break the single-season saves school record set by Quinton Thorne (181) in 2008.  Kirby has 161 stops with three games left on the 2012 schedule.

Heading into last week’s action, Kirby ranked 23rd on the active NCAA Division III saves list.  This season, he is 27th nationally in saves per game (13.41 spg).

Washington & Jefferson (3-10, 0-4 Landmark) returns to action on Wednesday when hosting Thiel for a 7:00 pm non-conference match at Alexandre Stadium.
