Rotto, Wilson Power W&J Softball Sweep At Brooks Park
WASHINGTON, Pa. Junior pitcher Madison Rotto (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) struck out a career-high 14 batters in game one to highlight Washington & Jefferson’s softball sweep of Pitt-Greensburg on Thursday at Brooks Park. The Presidents (10-6) claimed game one 5-3 and completed the sweep with a 10-7 win in the nightcap.
The Presidents, who upped their all-time record against UPG to 10-0, struck for two runs in the first inning of game one as junior shortstop Kelsey Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Twp.) drew a leadoff walk and senior second baseman Stephanie Zur (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) singled. Cunningham scored on freshman first baseman Emily Watson’s (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) single and senior center fielder D.J. Ufolla (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) followed with a base hit to score Zur.
The lead grew to 4-0 in the fourth after RBI singles by Watson and Rotto. An inning later, Watson scored on sophomore catcher Susan Lessman’s (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton) single for a five-run advantage. The Bobcats (5-4) answered with one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh before Rotto retired the final batter.
Zur, Watson and Rotto all had two hits in game one. Rotto gave up eight hits and walked three to earn the win.
Sophomore right fielder Chalese Wilson (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) highlighted the game two win with her first career home run and four runs batted in.
W&J committed four errors in the first 1 1/2 innings and fell behind 5-1. Cunningham provided the Presidents’ run after leading off the bottom of the first with a solo homer, the second of her career.
W&J then exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second to grab the lead for good. Sophomore left fielder Breanna Gleason (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) had the key hit, a two-run single. Wilson smacked a three-run home run in the third and freshman Krista McCartney (Salem, Ohio/United Local) worked the final two innings for her first collegiate save.
Wilson was 3-for-3 and scored three times, while Zur also had three hits. Sophomore Bethany Shepherd (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) collected the pitching win after allowing three earned runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. She struck out three Bobcats.
The Presidents return to Brooks Park on Saturday for a 1:00 pm PAC doubleheader with Bethany.
