Rowan Hands W&J Fourth-Straight Loss
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – 23rd-ranked Rowan limited No. 25 Washington & Jefferson to three hits and took advantage of four Presidents’ errors during a 9-1 victory at the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational at Chain of Lakes Field on Thursday.
Steve Melchiorre struck out five and did not walk a batter in eight innings on the mound to up his record to 2-1 this season for the Profs. Melchiorre surrendered just three hits and one earned run.
The Presidents pushed their lone run across during the first inning when junior designated hitter Ronny Peirish (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) knocked in classmate Derek McIlvaine (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) with a two-out single.
Melchiorre settled down after the first inning, setting down 11 of the next 12 batters he faced and holding the Presidents without another hit until McIlvaine singled with two outs in the fifth.
Rowan pushed across four runs, only two of which were earned, in the second and added a pair of unearned runs during the fourth to gain a comfortable 6-1 edge. Overall, four W&J errors led to five unearned runs crossing the plate for the Profs.
Sophomore right hander Tyler Dean saw his record drop to 0-1 after allowing six runs (two earned) during four innings on the hill. Dean fanned four batters and issued five bases on balls.
W&J (4-4) concludes its seven-game Florida trip with a doubleheader against Gallaudet in Auburndale on Friday beginning at 9:00 am.
