Scott Ryan Named to Division III All-Academic Squad
WASHINGTON, Pa. - Washington & Jefferson College junior Scott Ryan (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville East) was selected to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association 2011 Division III All-Academic Cross Country Team on Wednesday.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most recent semester and placed among the top 35 finishers at a NCAA regional championship.
A total of 141 student-athletes represent 80 institutions that earned at least one selection to the all-academic squad. As a team, Haverford claimed the most on the All-Academic list with five.
During the fall, Ryan became the first W&J men’s cross country runner to participate in a NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship. Ryan completed the 279-runner, 8K course with a time of 25:45.20. That performance ranks as the top 8K time in school history.
Ryan finished in 175th, just over two minutes behind National Champion Ben Sathre of St. Thomas (Minn.). Sathre was named the USTFCCCA Division III Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Ryan earned his invitation to the NCAA Championship after finishing 13th at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional in a time of 25:59.
A three-time Presidents’ Athletic Conference Runner of the Week in 2011, Ryan was the runner-up at the PAC Championships with a time of 26:46 in late October. He won individual titles at Waynesburg and Pitt-Greensburg earlier in the season.
Ryan earned a spot on the All-PAC First Team for the third-consecutive year after finishing among the top 15 finishers at six meets this season. He has won three races during his career, two this fall as well as the 2009 Hood Invitational.
During the spring, Ryan competes for the W&J track & field team where last year, he also earned USTFCCCA All-Academic laurels.
