Scranton Tops W&J Men's Lacrosse 11-4 In Landmark Game
SCRANTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson scored the first two goals, but Scranton stormed back to earn an 11-4 Landmark Conference men's lacrosse victory on Saturday at Fitzpatrick Field.
The Presidents (3-5, 0-2 Landmark) got on the scoreboard 26 seconds in when senior midfielder Tom Starr (Lorrain, Ohio/Friends Academy, Md.) scored an unassisted goal. W&J added another goal midway through the half when senior attacker Joseph Eck (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) fired home a shot off a pass from sophomore attacker Tim Angell (Andover, Mass./Governor's Academy).
The Royals (4-3, 1-0) scored twice to tie the game, but Starr struck again 21 seconds before the first quarter ended for a 3-2 Presidents' advantage.
Scranton dominated the second and third quarters; however, outshooting W&J by a 16-7 margin and scoring the only four goals to claim a 6-3 lead heading into the final 15 minutes. Dillon McInerney tallied the final goal of the spurt and added a pair of assists.
Angell netted an extra-man goal 31 seconds into the fourth quarter to bring the deficit back to two goals, but Scranton tacked on four goals during a stretch of just under four minutes to take control of the match.
The Royals finished with a 32-24 shot advantage and a 12-6 edge in faceoffs. Ben Worthington recorded 11 saves in the goal.
Sophomore goalie Conor Crowe (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) totaled 15 saves for the Presidents, who will look to snap a four-match losing streak on Thursday night when hosting Catholic (6:00 pm) for a conference game.
